The pork broth had a strong tonkotsu flavor, with a garlic accent that worked really well. The thin noodles were a little softer than I would have preferred; a firmer texture would have made the bowl even better.

The chashu was tender and delicious, and the seasoned egg was the highlight. There was a whole egg in the bowl, with a still-liquid yolk and plenty of flavor. It was especially satisfying.

The ramen was a little expensive, but the free fresh garlic topping was a great bonus. I tasted the broth on its own first, then added the garlic partway through. It gave the soup a much stronger garlic punch and made for a delicious change of flavor.

The restaurant was not busy, and the ramen came out quickly. However, the lighting was too dim for my liking, and its warm tone made the food look unnatural in photos. I ordered tonkotsu this time, but next time I would like to try one of the chicken ramen options.

<tomoyummy:visited>2026-10-31</tomoyummy:visited><tomoyummy:overall>5</tomoyummy:overall>

Aoyama Ramen — Tonkotsu Classic Ramen

Tonkotsu Classic Ramen at Aoyama Ramen pairs piping-hot, creamy broth with tender seared chashu and a garlicky egg, offering satisfying value at $12.50.

The broth arrived steaming hot, which made the first sip especially satisfying. It was rich and very creamy while still feeling light. The noodles were a familiar ramen style, cooked on the softer side, with a natural tenderness rather than a particularly firm or springy bite.

The chashu was nicely seared, well seasoned, and tender. The seasoned egg was delicious too, with a pronounced garlic flavor. Green onion, bean sprouts, and nori rounded out the bowl, and I liked the simple combination of toppings. The broth came with a small ladle instead of a standard ramen spoon, which I found a little awkward to use.

The restaurant was relatively small, with counter seating where you could watch the ramen being prepared right in front of you. It had the feel of a dedicated ramen shop. It was not crowded during my visit, and the ramen arrived quickly, both of which made the experience more pleasant.

At $12.50, this felt less expensive than a typical bowl of ramen and offered good value. The creamy broth, satisfying heat, and flavorful toppings made it a very enjoyable meal. I would like to return and try the other ramen.

<tomoyummy:visited>2026-10-24</tomoyummy:visited><tomoyummy:overall>4.5</tomoyummy:overall>

KC Craft Ramen — The Shishimaru Shrimp

The Shishimaru Shrimp at KC Craft Ramen pairs a frothy, shrimp-forward paitan broth with tender wagyu, making it a standout despite slightly soft noodles.

The frothy broth was the highlight of The Shishimaru Shrimp, a one-day special at KC Craft Ramen. The paitan broth combined chicken, pork bones, and dashi with shrimp oil, and several layers of flavor came through from the first sip. The shrimp flavor was clear, and I had never tasted a ramen broth quite like it in the U.S. It was easily the best ramen broth I have had so far.

Compared with the [KC Black I had on my previous visit](/kc-craft-black/), the broth was not as hot and the noodles were softer than I prefer. The slightly soft noodles were the main weakness, but the broth made this a very satisfying bowl overall.

The toppings were generous, especially with DX Topping. The very rare wagyu chashu was tender and delicious, and the thick-cut pork belly had plenty of fat, which made it wonderfully soft and flavorful. DX added two more slices of wagyu, the pork belly, and another half of a seasoned egg, giving me a whole egg instead of the usual half. The dried tomato was an unusual topping that I enjoyed, and the bowl also included fried gobo root and lettuce. The fried shrimp normally offered with DX had sold out by the time I arrived in the evening. I had been looking forward to trying it, so that was a little disappointing.

I had reserved the ramen in advance for $16.99, compared with the day-of base price of $18.99. With the $5 DX Topping, my bowl came to $21.99. I was very happy with the meal, especially the distinctive broth and tender meat toppings.

<tomoyummy:visited>2026-10-13</tomoyummy:visited><tomoyummy:overall>5</tomoyummy:overall>

KC Craft Ramen — KC Black

KC Black at KC Craft Ramen in Overland Park pairs piping-hot tonkotsu broth and gentle garlic with firm thin noodles for an excellent bowl.

The broth was piping hot, and the thin noodles were cooked slightly firm, just how I like them. I often find the broth lukewarm and the noodles too soft at other ramen restaurants, so I really enjoyed getting both just right here. The pork bone flavor came through clearly, with black garlic oil adding a pleasant accent. The thinly sliced, rare chashu was delicious, and the soft-boiled egg was well seasoned. The thin strips of menma were good too, a cut I do not often see at ramen restaurants in the U.S.

The menu and interior looked similar to Bushido Ramen in Ohio. I later learned that KC Craft Ramen's owner also provides ramen consulting through a separate company. I preferred KC Craft Ramen's broth and noodles to those I had at Bushido. The restaurant was almost full, and I spent the roughly 15-minute wait looking at the figures and Japanese snacks for sale near the entrance. I also spoke with the owner and his wife, who were both friendly and welcoming.

At $14.98, this felt like a good meal at a reasonable price. Frozen ramen was also available for $12, which I liked as an option for eating at home. The restaurant occasionally hosts collaborations with other ramen restaurants, and I have already booked the next one. I am looking forward to returning.

<tomoyummy:visited>2026-10-03</tomoyummy:visited><tomoyummy:overall>5</tomoyummy:overall>

Ramen Bowls — Hakata Tonkotsu

Hakata Tonkotsu at Ramen Bowls in Lawrence has a light, indistinct broth, soft thin noodles, and tasty seared chashu and seasoned egg.

I expected a pork-forward bowl from the Hakata Tonkotsu name, but the broth had almost no tonkotsu flavor. It was thin and difficult to describe because no clear flavor stood out. The thin noodles were a good fit for the style, although they were a little too soft.

The slightly firm, seared chashu was good. The soft-boiled egg was tender and well seasoned. Cabbage and black sesame were unusual toppings, and I did not think they worked well in this bowl.

The dining room had a good atmosphere, with a bar counter beside the open kitchen where you can watch the ramen being made. The regular price is $18.50, but this bowl was $15.50 with a $3 lunch-special discount. At the regular price, I would not return for it. Overall, this did not feel like traditional Hakata tonkotsu ramen and was disappointing.

<tomoyummy:visited>2026-09-29</tomoyummy:visited><tomoyummy:overall>2</tomoyummy:overall>

Menya Rui — Original Tsukemen

Original Tsukemen at Menya Rui in St. Louis pairs cold thick noodles with a seafood- and shoyu-forward dipping broth, scallop aroma, seared chashu, and menma.

Menya Rui was my first visit to a restaurant serving tsukemen. Tsukemen is a style in which cold noodles are dipped into a separate bowl of hot broth. The temperature contrast made each bite especially enjoyable.

The dipping broth was light yet deeply savory, with shoyu and pronounced dashi, especially bonito, at the forefront. The menu describes a concentrated scallop aroma, although I did not pick it out separately. It was delicious enough to drink to the last drop. The cold, house-made, medium-thick noodles had a satisfying bite. Small pieces of seared, well-seasoned pork shoulder chashu added plenty of flavor, and the seasoned menma was excellent. At the end, the remaining broth can be mixed with hot water, making it enjoyable to drink all the way through.

The dining room has many old signs and a great atmosphere. There was about a 20-minute wait to get inside, so it is best to arrive with extra time.

<tomoyummy:visited>2026-09-27</tomoyummy:visited><tomoyummy:overall>5</tomoyummy:overall>

Ramen Ray — Miso Ramen

Miso Ramen at Ramen Ray in Fishers pairs a rich tonkotsu-based miso broth with Hokkaido noodles and tender chashu in a welcoming Japanese setting.

The Miso Ramen at Ramen Ray is one of the best miso ramen bowls I have had in the United States. Its tonkotsu-based miso broth is deeply flavorful and immediately brought Sapporo-style miso ramen to mind.

The noodles are imported from Hokkaido and cooked to just the right firmness. They pair beautifully with the rich broth, while the chashu is tender enough to fall apart easily. The soft-boiled egg was delicious as well, even without a seasoned marinade.

The atmosphere feels genuinely Japanese and is especially comfortable. Ceramic bowls, rather than the plastic bowls often used elsewhere, add to the experience.

It is a little expensive, but I highly recommend this bowl. The flavor makes it well worth the price.

<tomoyummy:visited>2026-09-27</tomoyummy:visited><tomoyummy:overall>5</tomoyummy:overall>

Kiki on Ludlow — Shio Ramen

Shio Ramen at Kiki on Ludlow has a light chicken-based broth, tender chashu, and especially satisfying wavy Sun Noodles.

Kiki on Ludlow's shio ramen is simple in the best way. It has only the essentials: chashu, a tea-marinated egg, green onion, nori, and rayu. At $13, it is an approachable bowl.

The chicken-based broth was flavorful without being too salty. I only wished it had been served hotter and that the overall portion had been a little larger. The unseasoned chashu was tender, and while the egg did not have much tea flavor, it was well marinated and delicious.

The highlight was the wavy noodles. They were cooked perfectly and had a great texture. I thought they might be homemade, but a waiter told me that Kiki uses Sun Noodles.

The restaurant has plenty of small figures and artwork throughout the space, which made the interior enjoyable. I also had a Kiki Lager. It was crisp, refreshing, and paired nicely with the ramen.

<tomoyummy:visited>2026-09-25</tomoyummy:visited><tomoyummy:overall>4.5</tomoyummy:overall>

MI RAMEN — Buta Bara Ramen

Buta Bara Ramen at MI Ramen in Bellbrook has a dashi-infused chicken shoyu broth, tender pork rib, and a well-seasoned soft-boiled egg.

The broth was flavorful and served very hot, which made the bowl satisfying. However, it was spicier than I expected. The spice took over enough that it was difficult to distinguish the other flavors in the broth.

The noodles were ordinary. The pork rib was tender and delicious, although the bone made it difficult to eat. The soft-boiled egg had a soft texture and good seasoning.

The mushrooms and bok choy were good additions. Overall, the broth and pork rib made this a good bowl, but the spice was a little too strong for me.

<tomoyummy:visited>2026-09-25</tomoyummy:visited><tomoyummy:overall>3.5</tomoyummy:overall>

Bushido Ramen — Tonkotsu Ramen

Tonkotsu Ramen at Bushido Ramen in Dayton has rich pork broth, much-improved noodles, tender chashu, and a seasoned soft-boiled egg, though the soup lacks heat.

The Tonkotsu Ramen was much better than the ramen I had on my previous visit. The broth had a clear pork bone flavor and was delicious. The noodles were also much better than before. The restaurant's new website says the noodles are homemade, which may be why the texture had improved so much.

At first, the broth was noticeably not hot enough. After mixing it with the noodles, it became warmer, but I still wanted it hotter. I think the noodles and bowl may have cooled the soup down, which was disappointing.

The bamboo shoots were lightly sweet and well-seasoned. The soft-boiled egg was flavorful with a nicely runny center. The chashu was lightly seared, tender, and tasty, though its seasoning was mild. Personally, I do not like corn in ramen because it is difficult to eat at the end.

Bushido Ramen has made a huge improvement since my last visit. I could not recommend it before, but now I can recommend trying its Tonkotsu Ramen.

<tomoyummy:visited>2026-09-23</tomoyummy:visited><tomoyummy:overall>4</tomoyummy:overall>

Round1 — Myojo Miso Ramen

Myojo Miso Ramen at Round1 in Beavercreek has decent noodles, but its overly thin broth and sparse toppings make it a disappointing bowl.

The broth is far too thin, which is the bowl's biggest disappointment. There is no egg or chashu, and the green onion, menma, nori, and naruto make the toppings feel sparse.

The noodles are a little stuck together, likely because they are frozen, but they taste decent. That is not enough to overcome the weak broth and limited toppings.

Round1 offers plenty to do, and its Japanese arcade games are a highlight. I would not order this ramen again; a cup of instant ramen would be more satisfying.

<tomoyummy:visited>2026-09-18</tomoyummy:visited><tomoyummy:overall>2</tomoyummy:overall>

Kato Ramen Toledo — Shoyu/Tonkotsu Ramen

Shoyu/Tonkotsu Ramen at Kato Ramen Toledo has a flavorful, slightly thick pork bone broth with tender braised pork belly and a seasoned jammy egg.

The Shoyu/Tonkotsu Ramen has a delicious pork bone flavor with a slightly thick broth. It is served at a satisfying temperature and has the kind of depth that makes the bowl especially enjoyable.

The noodles are wavy and fairly standard. The bamboo shoots lack much seasoning, but the soft-boiled egg is flavorful and nicely cooked. The braised pork belly is tender, thick, and well-seasoned.

The warm welcome in Japanese on arrival and the traditional Japanese noren curtain in the dining room give the restaurant a Japanese atmosphere. The food and setting make this a satisfying stop, and I would return when I am in northern Ohio.

<tomoyummy:visited>2026-08-14</tomoyummy:visited><tomoyummy:overall>4.5</tomoyummy:overall>

Ima Izakaya — Tonkotsu Ramen

Tonkotsu Ramen at Ima Izakaya in Detroit has a smooth, milky broth, tender smoked pork belly, and punchy black garlic oil, but feels ordinary for $21.

The Tonkotsu Ramen has a smooth, milky broth rather than a rich, concentrated tonkotsu. The black garlic oil adds a welcome punch and gives the broth more character.

The smoked pork belly is thick, tender, and well-seasoned. The soft-boiled egg is cooked nicely, and the wakame, nori, and crispy leeks add variety to the bowl.

The noodles are overly soft and not to my taste. The beef is very tender and well-seasoned, and the cabbage, mushrooms, onions, and carrots have absorbed the flavor nicely.

Instead of typical ramen noodles, this bowl uses udon noodles. They work well with the broth, but they also make the dish feel less clearly like ramen.

The toppings are satisfying, but I finished the udon quickly. A slightly larger udon portion would make the bowl feel more complete, although the flavorful broth and toppings still make it a distinctive option.

<tomoyummy:visited>2026-06-26</tomoyummy:visited><tomoyummy:overall>4</tomoyummy:overall>

Zundo Ramen & Donburi Mason — Tomato Fried Shrimp Ramen

Tomato Fried Shrimp Ramen at Zundo Ramen & Donburi Mason pairs a creamy tomato broth with crisp fried shrimp, fresh tomato, and a subtle soy sauce note.

The Tomato Fried Shrimp Ramen has a rich, creamy tomato broth with a subtle soy sauce note underneath. The soy flavor is present through much of the broth without taking over its tomato character, making this a distinctive and satisfying bowl.

The noodles are fairly standard, but they work well with the broth. Their straightforward texture lets the creamy broth and tomato flavor remain the focus.

Four fried shrimp arrive on top, and they stay crisp and delicious. Two large, fresh tomato pieces add brightness to the tomato-based broth. I would have liked a stronger soy sauce flavor, and overall, the soup didn't quite satisfy me.

The noodles weren't really my preferred style either, although they weren't bad.

The seared chashu was tender and flavorful, and the menma had a good balance.
The seasoned egg was disappointing, though, as it had very little flavor despite being an ajitama.

Both the soup and noodles were served at a proper temperature, which was a plus.

One other disappointing point was that the food images on the restaurant's website were AI-generated or AI-edited.

The most memorable part of the bowl was the soup. It was too creamy with a thick texture. However, there wasn't much the pork oil, and flavor was weak for a tonkotsu broth. The wagyu beef was very tender and tasty. I wish it were served a little more rare. I don't think miso and beef broth are used together in Japan, so I had never tried this kind of soup before. It was good and served hot enough. The noodles were a little too soft for me, but they were still good. The soft-boiled egg was well-seasoned and delicious. There was seaweed in the bowl, but I'm not a fan of it in ramen.

<tomoyummy:visited>2025-12-07</tomoyummy:visited><tomoyummy:overall>4</tomoyummy:overall>

Cafe Mochiko — Turkey Shio

Turkey Shio at Cafe Mochiko in Cincinnati combines aromatic turkey and chicken paitan broth, flat noodles, tender turkey chashu, daikon, and komatsuna.

I had to wait about an hour to get seated, and since they don’t take reservations, it’s better to come with plenty of time. The interior had lots of artwork and looked beautiful.

The noodles were flat and seemed to be homemade, which I really liked. The broth wasn’t overly salty and had a nice turkey aroma that made it smell delicious even before eating. The farm-fresh daikon and komatsuna were both flavorful, and the turkey chashu was tender and incredibly good.

The soft-boiled egg was one of my favorite toppings and it was very soft with a light seasoning. The presentation was also beautiful, and both the appearance and taste were so good. I think this is the best ramen in Cincinnati. I will definitely come back and try other ramen.

<tomoyummy:visited>2025-11-21</tomoyummy:visited><tomoyummy:overall>5</tomoyummy:overall>

Slurping Turtle — DFFC Miso Ramen

DFFC Miso Ramen at Slurping Turtle in Columbus pairs rich kimchi-miso broth with duck fat fried chicken, thin noodles, buttered corn, and bold toppings.

I’ve been here several times, and personally, I think this is one of the best ramen shops in Ohio.

The Duck Fat Fried Chicken was absolutely delicious, and the thin noodles were great and matched well with the broth. The noodles were slightly stuck together, so I wish they had separated them before serving. The soup had kimchi in it, which added a bit of spice, and the rich miso flavor was really good. The other toppings were tasty as well.

Since I went on a Sunday afternoon, it was crowded and the food took some time to come out, but this ramen shop is worth the wait.

<tomoyummy:visited>2025-11-02</tomoyummy:visited><tomoyummy:overall>5</tomoyummy:overall>

Speakeasy Ramen — Ramen Flight

Ramen Flight at Speakeasy Ramen in Springfield compares tonkotsu, Szechuan, and Thai curry bowls with good flavor but small portions and cleanliness concerns.

I came here before and tried the Thai curry ramen, which was tasty. This time, I ordered the trio of small ramen bowls to compare the flavors. The interior had lots of artwork on the walls, and the upbeat music made it feel more like a bar.

The tonkotsu ramen was overly salty, and I could still feel the salt crystals in the broth. The Szechuan ramen was not too spicy and was actually pretty good. The Thai curry ramen was also tasty, and it's slightly spicy with a nice coconut milk flavor that balanced well.

Overall, the flavors themselves were good, but there were almost no toppings, and both the noodles and broth portions were very small for this price. The most disappointing part was that the fork still had pieces of scallions stuck to it, which made me feel the cleanliness wasn’t well managed. Even if the ramen tastes good, it’s hard to enjoy it when the utensils aren’t clean.

<tomoyummy:visited>2025-11-01</tomoyummy:visited><tomoyummy:overall>2</tomoyummy:overall>

Bushido Ramen — Creamy Chicken

Creamy Chicken at Bushido Ramen in Dayton has tender grilled chicken and a flavorful egg, but its weak broth and gummy noodles leave the bowl unbalanced.

The noodles tasted cheap and had a gummy texture, like the ones often used in cafeteria-style ramen in Japan, so I didn’t really like them. Although the menu described the broth as creamy, I didn’t find it creamy at all, and the chicken flavor was quite weak. The large grilled chicken slices were tender, and the seasoned egg was flavorful and tasty. However, I felt that there were too many toppings, which took away from the flavor of the soup. Overall, it looked nice but felt a bit unbalanced.

I also ordered the Mini Karaage Bowl, which was surprisingly delicious. The crispy fried chicken was topped with a special sauce and mayonnaise that mixed perfectly with the rice, making it incredibly flavorful.Personally, I’d recommend this more than the ramen itself.

<tomoyummy:visited>2025-10-22</tomoyummy:visited><tomoyummy:overall>2</tomoyummy:overall>

MI RAMEN — Matcha Ramen

Matcha Ramen at MI Ramen in Bellbrook balances a distinctive matcha broth with chashu and a seasoned egg for a better-than-expected bowl.

I saw this matcha ramen last week and was curious, so I decided to try it this time. It’s definitely one of the most unique bowls of ramen I’ve had, but it turned out to be more delicious than I expected.

The broth had a matcha flavor, but it wasn’t overpowering, just the good balance. The chashu and egg were the same as before, both good seasoned and tasty.

If you have the chance, I definitely recommend trying their ramen this month while it's still on sale!

<tomoyummy:visited>2025-10-10</tomoyummy:visited><tomoyummy:overall>4</tomoyummy:overall>

MI RAMEN — Butter Shoyu Ramen

Butter Shoyu Ramen at MI Ramen in Bellbrook has a mild chicken-soy broth, savory chashu, and a memorable block of butter on top.

It was good chicken shoyu ramen. The block of butter placed on top was quite memorable. The soup was a chicken-based shoyu broth, but the soy sauce flavor wasn’t too strong. As expected, the soup wasn’t piping hot. The chashu had a nice, savory flavor and was really tasty.

This ramen usually costs $14.89, but this month it’s on sale for $13.00 including a drink, which makes the price and taste pretty good overall. I’d like to come back again to try their other ramen options.

<tomoyummy:visited>2025-10-03</tomoyummy:visited><tomoyummy:overall>4</tomoyummy:overall>

Round1 — Myojo Ramen

Myojo Ramen at Round1 in Beavercreek has decent shio-tonkotsu flavor, chashu, bamboo shoots, and a convenient setting, though it arrives lukewarm.

The ramen looked cheap at first, but the taste was actually decent. The broth had a tonkotsu flavor but was a bit thin and not served piping hot. The noodles had a chewy texture. I felt that corn didn’t really go well with it. The seasoned egg was flavorful, and the seasoned fried tofu I ordered instead of pork chashu was also well-seasoned and tasty.

The bowl was $14, which seemed like a typical price for ramen in the U.S. The interior was filled with Anime figures and snacks for sale, which gave the place a fun and unique vibe. They offered drinks like Calpico and boba tea, but there was no sake or other Japanese alcoholic beverages.

<tomoyummy:visited>2025-09-26</tomoyummy:visited><tomoyummy:overall>3</tomoyummy:overall>

Umisoba — Tokusei Shoyu Soba

Tokusei Shoyu Soba at Umisoba in Oiso combines rich seafood-soy broth with thin noodles, tender rare chashu, and a well-seasoned soft-boiled egg.

This ramen shop is in my hometown, and I honestly think it’s the best ramen shop in the world. The broth, noodles, chashu, and egg — everything is absolutely perfect. The soup has a soy sauce base with a rich seafood flavor, served with thin noodles. The chashu is rare and tender, and the egg is soft-boiled, well-seasoned, and incredibly soft.

The owner does everything by himself, so it can take a little time for your ramen to be served, but it’s always worth the wait. One thing I really liked was that you can choose the size from S to L. The base price was $16.25, and the larger size was $17.25. I was also able to use a student discount, which gave me a free upsize for one dollar — a great deal.

They used tip-of-bamboo shoots (hosaki menma), which were very flavorful and delicious. I was a bit disappointed that there was no seasoned egg, but I found it interesting that the bowl was topped with umeboshi, a dried pickled plum. It added a unique touch.

The noodles weren’t thin, but they had a medium thickness that felt just right. The broth wasn’t salty at all, and the temperature was perfect. It had a clean shio flavor with a light tonkotsu taste, and honestly, there was nothing to complain about.

Since this shop is part of a Japanese chain with locations in many places, it felt reassuring to eat here, knowing the quality would be consistent.

<tomoyummy:visited>2024-12-16</tomoyummy:visited><tomoyummy:overall>5</tomoyummy:overall>

REDWHITE BONELESS RAMEN — Garlic Miso

Garlic Miso at REDWHITE BONELESS RAMEN in Boston is a miso ramen with thick noodles, pork chashu, spinach, green onion, egg, and nori.

<tomoyummy:visited>2024-12-15</tomoyummy:visited><tomoyummy:overall>4</tomoyummy:overall>

JINYA Ramen Bar — JINYA Tonkotsu Original 2010

JINYA Tonkotsu Original 2010 at JINYA in Fishers delivers a bold pork broth with soy sauce and garlic, plus satisfying noodles, chashu, and egg.

As soon as I walked in, the staff greeted me with an "Irasshai!," which is a traditional Japanese welcome.
